Why is part clamping needed?

• A wire bond is made with ultrasonic vibration (often in combination with applied heat)

  • If the part is not held stationary relative to the tool, the bond either cannot be made or is poor quality
• Die bonds involve tool pressure to press the die onto the substrate
  • The substrate must be clamped on the tooling so that it does not shift relative to the part being placed, which could cause misalignment and bond failure
