Highlights from the Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics

The Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics (CLEO) 2016 was the last of the “big three” photonics shows in the US (Photonics West, OFC, and CLEO). This has been held the last several years in San Jose, California, and will return there next year on June 8-13, 2017. There were about 200 exhibitors at the show this year, but there were over 4,600 attendees and 2,100 presentations.

Hot topics included quantum cascade lasers on silicon, multi-channel quantum communication and higher capacity quantum computers, photonic crystals to improve solar cell efficiency, a photoacoustic catheter probe to help better identify heart disease, as well as optical microscopy for brain imaging, three dimensional printing, and single-photon nonlinear optics. The exhibitors consisted of optics equipment vendors, lasers, and opto-electronic components.

Consumer Physics was demonstrating a product called SCiO. SCiO reads the
chemical make-up of materials. It is a non-intrusive, no-touch optical sensor that provides a seamless user experience. It was shown detecting the sugar content of fruits and drinks, the alcohol content in drinks, and the fat content of meat (through the plastic wrapper on ground beef)! We are proud to have had a part in developing this amazing technology at Palomar.
